Cast Nets

We will start with cast nets as they seem to be the biggest winner at camp. Cast netting is as good as it gets when it come to some high quality fun on the water. To make it better, you can cast net almost anywhere there is water and the mystery of what your gatta get is always there. The key to a cast net buying is their size. As a rule of thumb, your cast net should be at least as tall as the person throwing it. That being said, if someone has not mastered cast netting yet then its best to go with one slightly smaller than the thrower.

  • Experianced cast net thrower - Net as tall as them or 1 foot taller.

  • Just recently learned - Net as tall as them.

  • Beginner - As tall as them or 1 foot smaller.

Rods and Reels

I am going to keep this one simple so it does not turn in to a Ford vs. Chevy thing. You can spend any amount of money you would like on a fishing reel and there are alot more options them shown here, but these I know for a fact I personally have used and can get behind. You will find fishing reels priced as high as you feel like counting. At the end of the day, we want a rod and reel that will succesfully catch a fish we hook (excluding user error) and withstand your childs abuse. These rod and reels have proven to last and I believe bring the most value for your dollar. A quality reel is the single most important thing in a fishermans arsenal and unfortuantly, you get what you pay for. That being said, all of these listed are truely great reels and if taken care of, they will last.

Penn - Prabably the most popular reel in the saltwater world. We use these durring camp any couldnt be more hapy with them. The battle 3 is the best bang for your buck and many of the reels we bought we when launched camp 5 years ago that are still running great today. The spinfisher is just a step up from the battle and has been around a while. The Slammer is one of their new reels and is a beast, but shows on the price. The 2500 to 3500 size is a great inshore size, while a 5 or 6000 is more suitable for offshore or surf fishing.

The Battle 3 Spinfisher Slammer 3500

Diawa BG - Diawas replica of the Penn Battle 3. Its hard to say one is better than the other. Any many miny moe???

  Diawa BG

Shimano Stratic - Ok, I am slightly biased on this one. I have the same stratic that I bought when I was 15 and it still workds great. The Stratic is one of the greatest reels every made for our waters and its repulation speaks for itself.

  Static

Toadfish rod and reel combo - This one is the new kid on the block, but has been gaining traction. I have seen more and more campers bringing this one to camp with them. It has some bright colors but I was impressed with it. Pretty cool pick if you want somthing a little more flashy.

  Toadfish

Tsunami SaltX - If your child has been extra good this year, you could treat them with one of the best reels made in a while, this one is suppose to take even the harshest of beatings. Getting high praise at this years ICAST event, you can be sure its worth the heftly prise tag!

Fishing Tools

I am going to put fishing tools into 3 main categories; Fishing Pliers, Fillet Knifes and Fishing Nets.

Fishing Pliers - Fishing pliers are simply a must have, cutting line, removing hooks, crimping leads, splitting rings are just some of the things that my pliers assist me with everytime I go out. When you forget your pliers, you always regret it. Your going to see some more biasm here as we showcase our sister company's pliers as out #1 pick; Tides Fishing Pliers. The main thing your looking for here are either aluminium or titanium body to keep them from rusting. You also want some line cutters that are eaisly replaced as they are bound to dull.

Fishing Knifes - As a fisherman, a good fillet knife can be the difference between a good ending of the day or a bad one. Not only will a good knife help you fillet your fish better and faster, but it will also keep you safer. The most dangerous fillet knife it a dull one.

  • Dexter Is the 'get the job done knife'. A quality fillet knife that wont break the bank.

  • Cuda Set - Similar to the popular Bubba Blade Set, but have heard better stuff about the Cuda knives.

  • Sharpener - More important than the knife itself is a good sharpener. The fish will eat your blade up after every trip and having a sharpener is a key sidekick to a good fillet knife.

  Good Better Essensial

Fishing Nets - You dont have to be a fisherman to understand why a net is a nessasary tool in the fishing world. Too many times have fish fell through my hand because I simply forgot the net. The two most important things for kids is that its able to travel and have rubber netting to protect the fish.

Fishing Bags and Tackle Boxes

Fishing Bags - Fishing bags are perfect for kids. Since they cant drive yet, having a bag that can be easily fit all their gear and allow them to throw it over their shoulder is a must. A good bag has plenty of storage and is small enough for kids.

  Good Better Best

Tackle Boxes - Tackle boxes have come a long way, but at the end of the day... Its just somthing to store all our tackle in. When looking for a tackle box I look for watertightness and simplicity.

  • The Plano boxes are hard to beat and have had the market cornered forever.

  • Buzbe is a really cool new company that has created an amazing tacklebox. It seems to do everything others cannot and offers a modular design so you can customize it to your needs.

Apearal

Well this could be an entirely seperate post, so I am just going to name some items that I think truely make for a more enjoyable time on the water.

  • Deck Boots - First up is going to be boots, a good pair of fishing boots is a must when living in an area like ours filled with exstreamly dangerous oysters. Huk and Xtratuf are the only ones I have used and both work great.

       Xtratuf Xtratuf Kids Huk

  • Bibs and Rain Jacket - You are not a fisherman until you wear a pair of bibs. Its hard to understand how great they are until you are in a wet envirorment with/without them. Grudens own this market and are truly a great product. The rain Jacket speaks for itself.

  • Polarized Sun Glasses - If you know what polarized sunglasses are then I dont need to explain how much of a difference they can make on the water. If you dont, it basically makes you super human allowing you to see through the water (Truely). Just remember green lenses are geared more towards inshore fishing and blue towards offshore.

Maui Jim Huk Costa Del Mar

  • Shirts - I always go with the long sleeve PDF perfermance shirts and just about every fishing company has their own. The 3 that stick out to me are Salt Life (Jacksonville Local), Aftco and Pelagic.

    Maui Jim Huk Pelagic

Artificials

As your kids get more and more experianced they may want to start to jump into the artificial game and challenge themselfs a little more. Below is a list of artificials that have been Proven,

  • Top Water - The absolute most exiting way to catch a fish is also one of the most challenging. Next time

 Super Spook Super Sook Jr.

  • Spoon - There is a saying that simplicity is best when fishing. The Spoon is the best example of this as it is prabably one of the oldest lures and still one of the best

       Gold Silver

  • Bucktail Jig - Another old fashioned bait that will catch a variaty of species.

  • NLBN - All the rave these days is the 'No Live Bait Needed'

       Gold Silver
